“There was an idea… The idea was to bring together a group of remarkable people, see if they could become something more. See if they could work together when we needed them to fight the battles we never could.”   ―Nick Fury of Avengers Endgame.

My sister and I didn’t really start watching the Marvel Cinematic Universe until the release of The Avengers in 2012. Even then, we didn’t really watch any other movies in that universe because superheroes weren’t really that interesting to us at that time. However, one day at our local library last year, my sister and I spotted The Avengers and decided to re-watch it for fun. My sister decided it would be best if we watched Ironman and all of the other superhero films that came out before The Avengers first. Little did we know it would end with Avengers Endgame.

21 Movie Journey

In three months, my sister and I had watched every movie in the cinematic universe including the most recent film in the universe, Avengers: Infinity War. From that point, the superheroes and their stories felt real. Captain America, Ironman, Thor, Hulk, Spider-man, Ant-man, and many others became household names.

In the early months of this year, my sister and I got the news of Captain Marvel going into the theaters. We were a little hesitant to see it because of all the gender politics surrounding the actress of the film. Once we discovered that we would need to see it to the movie in order to understand the events that would occur in Avengers: Endgame, we knew we had to see it. Going into the film, my sister and I didn’t have too high of hopes, but it was better than we could have ever expected.

After seeing Captain Marvel, my sister and I knew the happiness we felt would be short lived because of Avengers: Endgame’s upcoming release quickly approaching. We knew we would be in for it after the confirmation that the film would be clocking in at 3 hours. This would make it the longest film in Marvel history and nothing like this had ever been done before. Nothing would be able to prepare my sister and I for what we would be seeing in that theater.

Prepping for the Avengers

Despite that fact, my sister and I did our best to prepare the way we knew how. A week before the screening, I purchased the tickets online and was lucky to get a matinee showing. In the days leading up to Avengers Endgame, my sister and I selected our snacks and still felt something was missing. To truly represent our love for this event and arrive to the theater in style, we needed some clothes that would showcase that.

Designing Avengers

Avengers Endgame

After some brainstorming, my sister decided we would create our own Marvel-inspired t-shirts to wear to the premiere. Our design idea was inspired by a simple sketch we had found on Pinterest. Taking that sketch, my sister and I reworked the design to give it a more of our desired look. We wanted to include part of our style on the shirt, while still staying true to the Avengers endgame theme. After hours of back and forth (heated discussion), we finally decided on a unique design for our scheduled viewing night. The new design featured the helmet of Ironman, the shield of Captain America, and the helmet of Thor under a set of crossed arrows with the Avengers logo underneath.  Another blog that describes the process in more detail is here.

Avengers-CorelDraw-Design Space

First we hashed out the rough draft in CorelDraw X6. I know its a little dated as far as software goes but it still fits our needs. You can check out CorelDraw here. Our design was complete. Now we proceeded to upload our image to the Cricut design space.  Check out Cricut here.   Once uploaded to the design space. We needed to make some necessary touch ups to our design. It had to fit within our allotted space on our shirts.

Cutting time

cutting

We had picked out our heat transfer vinyl ahead of time. Just make sure it is good quality. Because you want it to be able to last for a long time. Now we prepared out cutting mat by applying the vinyl and making sure it was smooth with no bubbles. We were making two shirts out of tow diifferent colored vinyls. So we had to repeat this process twice. On our design the cut time was pretty quick because of the simplicity of the design.

Weeding The Avengers

My not so favorite part of cutting vinyl is up. After the design was cut into the vinyl, the excess vinyl was trimmed and the small cut pieces were weeded out of the design. This wasn’t too horrible on this design. It wasn’t too intricate.
Pressing the Avengers
Before, proceeding further, the heat press was booted up and the temperature was set. Before the heat press reached full temperature, the shirts were pressed to remove any wrinkles and moisture before adding the design.

Application Instructions for heat transfer vinyl

Cut in reverse
Weed excess material
Preheat garment for 2-3 seconds
Apply design at 305°F/150°C
Use medium pressure for 10-15 seconds
Peel carrier hot or cold
Wait 24 hours before first wash.

Then came the most fun part of all: centering the design on the shirt. This part is crucial to ensure the t-shirt turns out correctly and looks great. After the design was centered, the teflon sheet was placed on the shirt and the design was pressed onto the shirt. The transfer tape was then carefully peeled off the shirt and then the shirt was pressed a for a final 20 seconds with the teflon sheet to set the design. After our shirts were finished, we repeated the process to make our little brother one as well.

Avengers Endgame

Now, we were officially ready to experience the movie event that 21 movies set up. Avengers Endgame.
