Cricut Vs Silhouette

Cricut vs Silhouette

Both the silhouette and cricut can cut fabric and vinyl. If you own a vehicle, one can put the cutter in the boot and travel with it anywhere. They are of medium size thus can’t fit in an ordinary bag but can fit in a traveling bag. Because of their work, both companies have less variety because the main idea was for industrial use only. There are both manual and electric cutters, for manual, one has to align the paper or cloth to be properly while the electric one needs alignment from a computer. Below is the difference between cricut and silhouette cutter.

Cricut vs Silhouette

Cricut vs Silhouette Speed

The speed of silhouette is 5 minute per cut while cricut is 1.50 minutes. In this case, cricut is faster than the other one and can perform faster especially while there is bulk cutting. In printing industries, one needs a cutter that will cut more quickly to move to the next project. On the other hand, if there are no paperwork or materials for cutting, one can use the silhouette. The speed of the cutter determines how many cuts will be made in a day. The slower it is, the more time it takes. Some materials require keenness when cutting hence need more time when cutting to ensure accuracy is present.

Rotary Cutting Blade

The cricut has a rotational cutting blade. The rotary blade is used in cutting fabrics, crepe, and fepe. No backing up is required. However, the silhouette does not have a rotary cutting blade; it has only the front cutting blade. The rotating cutter works well compared to the one that does not rotate, the reason being that it will cut faster and thoroughly compared to that cuts once and one will have to recut again when in need. If you don’t need much cutting, silhouette will work well, but if you need more cutting, cricut is the best.
Scoring Stylus Tool

With the silhouette, one needs a knife tool for it to perform; it cannot function when one is not present. The cricut can operate with the stylus and scoring tool at a different time and still produce good results. Blades can be changed when they become blunt at a specific cost. They all come with warranties and if it becomes blunt on the warranty period replacement is free. Some manufacturers, however, requires one to purchase the blade and they do the replacement. In this case, one needs to come with an agreement so that both sides can benefit. The function of each edge depends on type of work being rendered to it.

Equipment Color

The cricut comes in rose, blue, champagne, and grey colors respectively. However, the silhouette comes in lavender, mint, pink, black, white and many other colors one can choose from. Unlike the Cricut which has only four colors to choose from. For someone who likes variety, silhouette, is the best option when it comes to colors. Depending on the industry which the cutter will be used, there are those who prefer a particular color for their production and size. One can also request a specific color to be made for them so that it can fit well in their branding especially those who are color sensitive. It can only be done on a bulk order and not for one product.

Design Software

In terms of software design, cricut works perfectly with any software while silhouette requires SVG file to operate well, without the file, it’s hard to use the software. Despite that, no upgrade is required once the data is in place. They are many designing software, especially in the fabric industries. One involves one that does not need too much work when operating. Depending on someone’s need, there are those who need one that does not need an upgrade because of the cost involved in upgrading software and maintaining previous images and personal settings. There are those who use cricut because it’s easy to use while they are those who use silhouette because there is no upgrade once the SVG is installed.

Cricut vs Silhouette cutting materials

Silhouette cannot cut, leathers, freezer papers, kraft board, and ship boards, suede and foil paper, cereal papers, craft foam, moleskin metal and plastic packing, poster board and window cling. Cricut cannot cut wax paper and heat transfer materials. Since there are many materials in the world which can be cut down to create a piece of something, it is best to ask which one works well for a particular cutter. Most have a list of things that can be cut by a specific cutter.

Project Size

Cricut can cut 11.5″x 23.5″ if one is using a 24″ measure. The silhouette cuts 12x 10 feet in terms of length. One can add more step to bring out the size they want for a particular item.

Cutting Force

Silhouette cuts 210gf while cricut cuts 4000gf that are twice faster than a silhouette. It implies that cricut can cut two materials more quickly while the silhouette is cutting one. In a busy organization where more cutting activity is required, cricut can work well in terms of money and time.

Each cutter has its function; the task is what makes the difference if the workloads are vast, one needs a cutter that will work faster if one is looking for accuracy one needs a cutter that takes time to finish because it will cut as aligned. One needs to place each length correctly; otherwise, it may cut out badly which can create repetition of work and can cost especially if its fabric. One needs to select the best cutter for their work whether it’s slow or faster.

As for me and my house we are in the Cricut camp.  You can  check out some nice projects that we have done.
