Thanks dad!

I hope to show some oil painting techniques that I use in my art that will help you.  I also plan on improving my oil painting techniques through my practicing and posting here on this blog.   When I begin to plan an oil painting I begin with canvas selection. This part of the process is crucial because the wrong canvas could mess up the appearance of the piece.

Getting Started on the oil painting tutorial

For my more simpler oil pieces, I prefer to use canvas boards, or known to other artists as illustration boards. This type of canvas is ideal due to its thin, yet sturdy surface.

Also, I found them at my local Walmart for cheap.

Inspiration always helps

Before I apply the paint to my canvas, I create the layout. This is basically an artist’s blueprint for their project. Before I start my layout, I look through images on Pinterest to find inspiration.

Usually, I find myself inspired by images that invoke a lot of emotion.  For example, I was inspired to paint this piece in particular after watching the Pixar short, “The Blue Umbrella.” I guess you could peg me as a sucker for cute and cheesy romance, but I love it!

When I have my idea in mind, I use a HB sketching pencil to sketch out my layout for the piece I want to do. It is important that an HB pencil is used. Because other pencils may come out too dark and then it will be hard to change the layout if any mistakes are made.

After sketching the layout, I touch up any stray marks that I may have made during the layout process with my eraser. The best eraser to use for a canvas is a kneaded eraser because of its flexible and moldable design, which allows the artist to mold it into any shape they desire.

After the layout is complete and the color palette, or set of colors for the painting is chosen.  When paint is ready to be added to the canvas. Paintbrushes and paint are also taken into account.   Daler-Rowney is the brand that I have had the best results with.

Oil painting Techniques

For this piece, I really wanted the couple in the pupil’s reflection stand out.  One of the many oil painting techniques that can be utilized involves contrasting colors.  I used primary colors. For the rest of the background, I stuck to blacks and greys.

Original oil painting

This piece is titled “In the rain.”  The goal was  to capture this piece in the reflection of an eye.  Because I wanted to show perspective and emotion throughout.  This painting reflects the sadness of a lost love as seen through here eye.  The couple walking in love hand in hand through the storming rain.  The lost love can just stare with tears as love walks out of her life.

This piece in particular took me 20 hours to complete. I was able to have this much time to work on it with ease due to the oil paints workable consistency and slow drying time.

It was truly a fantastic feat and I enjoyed doing it.  It happens to be one of my dads favorites.  Click here for other art posts
