“Embrace”

Another work of art by my Daughter.  I am biased of course but I believe she is talented.  She has worked very hard to get here.  She continues to hone her skill and will only get better.  This is one of her first pieces where she drew from her imagination and not from an inspiration piece.

This piece in particular is special to me because it is unlike anything I have ever drawn before. I wanted to create by drawing from imagination.  In my past works I used silhouettes of couples as the center of my paintings and even some of my colored pencil pieces.  This piece in particular was unique and stood out to me because it was the first piece where I added more detail than I had before.  Because I was drawing from imagination.

I guess I was always scared to take the plunge and try to add more detailing to my previous art because of the fear that it wouldn’t look the way I intended.  The decision was made  to add more detailing to this piece in particular because I felt I had enough confidence and I felt enough time had passed since my last rendering of a couple.

Drawing from imagination preparation

This piece took longer to complete than my other art that had featured couples because I put more thought into it and relied less on a reference and tried to sketch from the image that existed only in my imagination. This was rather difficult because I was now working in completely different territory.  Up to that point, I relied more on the references that I had chosen rather than my overactive imagination.

Time to create art

I needed to start Drawing from imagination and with my best sketching pencil, I began the creation of my sketch.  It took some time to frame out my subjects.  After hours of sketching and erasing.  I was finally satisfied with the sketch.

Everything needs a little color

As much as I like a good pencil sketch.  Life is better when some color is applied.  Taking my colored pencils, I began to add necessary color to my piece.  As far as colored pencils go, I am normally not that picky, but when working with canvas board as I was on this project, a premium colored pencil brand such as Prismacolor or Platinum will get the job done.

My choice of colored pencils

The reason being that a canvas board is a hard surface and these brands of colored pencils are thick and durable enough to incorporate color without much breakage. After many hours of erasing, re-sketching lines and applying color.  I decidedly declared that I was satisfied with the final results.  I had accomplished another project and continue to grow and pollish my skills as an artist

With my piece now complete and in full color, I decided to title this piece “Embrace” because I felt that I had done a great job of capturing the emotions surrounding a warm embrace. This piece is truly a favorite one of mine. Because of the use of  detailing on this piece that some of my earlier pieces had lacked.  Read here.  However, I wish I would have added more detail and definition to the arms in the piece.   Oh well you live and learn and do better next time.  I am still happy with the end result overall.  Read here for an article about drawing from imagination.

I truly love painting and sketching couple art because I get the opportunity to tell a compelling story. In other words, when my words fail, my art speaks for itself.  Here is a blog post about perspective drawing by Shubhi .  You can read it here.
