Spiderman Pinata

The resident artist of the family is back with a new art project! A lot of the summer events in my town had been canceled and my sister and I still wanted to do something fun before summer ends. In one week, my brother will be having his birthday and I couldn’t think of a better way to celebrate than devoting the whole day to a huge camping adventure! Because we aren’t really a camping family and all the restrictions in place, we decided to camp in our backyard. Since May, my sister and I have planned the itinerary for our brother’s special day and it included activities like a scavenger hunt, a nature hike and a pinata.

Make a Pinata

Probably the hardest and most exciting part of my brother’s birthday would be to make a pinata. My brother loves Spiderman and I felt inspired to incorporate that into his pinata. I had originally planned on just going to the store and buying a spider-man pinata to save time, but my local store was sold out so I figured I would just make the pinata with my sister.  You could also use a Cricut to help make the paper cuts.  My sister and I did it all by hand.

Pinata Supplies

For supplies, we traveled to our local Walmart and bought white school glue, red and blue gift tissue, scotch tape, foam craft brushes, and black cardstock to decorate the pinata. These supplies were quite cheap and easy to find, which made this project a lot easier on me.

Its Building time

To make a pinata, I used some leftover cardboard boxes and hot glue and masking tape to hold it together.
To begin, my sister and I broke down one of the leftover cardboard boxes and cut it in half. Next, the shape of the measurements of the top and bottom parts of the pinata were sketched on the pinata in black sharpie and then cut out. Since it would be my brother’s eighth birthday, two eights were cut out. Next, two smaller strips of cardboard (about 3- 5 in. wide, 12 in. long) were bent and shaped to go around both sides of the eights.

Decorating

Once shaped, the cardboard strips were taped in place using scotch tape. Before securing the top eight, my sister used jewelry wire in the top so the pinata would be able to be hung up. The pinata was then hot glued in the gaps to keep it together and a small opening was cut into the side of the pinata to allow for the candy to be put into it.pinata

After hot gluing.  The blue gift tissue was glued to the sides using the school glue.  Then the red was cut to look like fringe and glued on both eights. For this part of the process. My sister and I used cheap foam craft brushes to spread the glue on it in thin layers.

Embelishments

Once the gift tissue was glued in place and trimmed to our liking.  My sister and I took the black card stock.   We then used our Cricut machine to cut it into web and spider shapes.  Then, the spider and web were glued into place using hot glue.   Finished the pinata was filled with the candy of our choice.

Finished

This pinata was a lot easier than I thought it would be to make.  I really enjoyed making it with my sister.  We can’t wait to see how well it holds together on my brother’s birthday.pinata
