inspirational coasters

Sharing is caring!

I wanted to design a mod podge coaster. With all of the chaos we are involved with this virus. My desire was to do something memorable and inspirational. So I figure I could take this mod podge coaster idea and add some vinyl in to the mix. I think you’ll all the finished product.

Vinyl on wood

The thing is have you ever attempted to make a do it yourself project involving wood and adhesive vinyl? I have before and have not been very successful. To make a DIY wood sign with adhesive vinyl decal is not that easy. Unless you know of some trick. Please inform me of your blog and you’ll have gained a reader.

Supplies

For this Mod Podge coaster tutorial you will need the following supplies
Unfinished Wood or ceramic tile can also work for this tutorial.

SVG design. I like to do my own in CorelDraw.

Cricut maker or any cutting machine

Mod Podge

Smooth Heat Transfer Vinyl My go to brand is (Siser Easyweed)

Weeding Tool

Iron or heat press

So what do you think? Are you ready to try heat transfer vinyl on wood? Or have you already given it a try? Tell me all about it in the comments below.

SO, the big question is CAN YOU USE HTV ON WOOD?

The answer to that question is a big fat YES! You can absolutely use heat transfer vinyl on wood. Not only can you use HTV on wood, but It is infact my new preference to using adhesive vinyl to design my wood projects and signs. Here’s why:

Heat Transfer Vinyl is not as glossy as most permanent adhesive vinyl, and the more matte finish looks closer to paint and less like a sticker.

It sticks! As I already mentioned, sometimes getting adhesive vinyl to adhere on wood can be a massive pain.

With HTV there are more colors and style options! If you have a favorite glitter HTV, you can use that for your sign instead of trying to find a similar color in adhesive vinyl.

HTV (especially smooth HTV like Siser Easyweed) is really thin and flexible, so it looks almost like paint on the wood. You can see how the iron on vinyl almost melts into the wood in the photo below.

Designing your mod podge coaster

Your first part of this project is coming up with the design you want to use. Like I have mentioned earlier I am a big fan of CorelDraw. So that is what I use for most of my designs. I like doing it myself. For my design I wanted to have a reminder of the chaos in the world right now. But I wanted to put a positive spin on it and highlight how many are coming together to help each other out in their times of need. When you have your design make sure you save it as a .png file. It works out the best in importing.

Cutting and Weeding

Next up is getting your design in to the Cricut Design Space or the program of the cutter you plan to use.
Log in to Design Space
Click the Create New Project button
Click the Upload Image button
Drag and drop your design on to the screen.
Or Click the Browse button and locate your svg file that you want to import and send it to the Cricut to be cut.

All that is left is to weed your design. If you went with Siser Easyweed as your vinyl this task is fairly easy. But it also depends on how intricate your design is. Just take your time to remove all of the little excess bits of vinyl. A little caution here will only help improve you end project.

Heat Press

Now its time to press your design. You can use an iron for this part if you like. My first choice is to use my heat press.  When pressing I actually don’t clamp my press all the way down. I just drop the handle until its firm and heat it at 325 degrees for 20 seconds. Like I said earlier the htv almost looks like paint. I was able to pick up the square wood from Home Depot. It is a sample of their flooring tile.

Mod Podge Coaster

Last but not least is sealing your piece. I seal it with Mod Podge. I use the formula that is water proof. When using these mod podge coasters you want to protect your design from water damage. I really like the way it turned out.

So what do you think? Are you ready to try heat transfer vinyl on wood? Or have you already given it a try? Tell me all about it!
